  • I bake pies. I bake a lot of pies. I have baked a lot of pies for a lot of years and, hands-down, I bake more pies in September, October and November than I do the other nine months of the year COMBINED.

I have two theories to account for this. One is obvious: the weather is cooler which makes folks hungry (...and they're just not as concerned with how they're going to look in their swimsuit by October).

Number Two: The majority of our customers after Labor Day and through the end of color tour are empty-nesters and retirees. Watch an older person when they sit down to look at a menu sometime--they almost always look at the dessert menu first. In fact, they will often tailor their entire meal to accommodate their dessert.

While I'm on the subject of pies, I'm selling pumpkin pies at a rate of 2 to 1 over cherry pie (even though Northwest Michigan is known for its cherry industry) and 4 to 1 over apple and blueberry. But no matter how many pumpkin pies I can sell right now, I know by the day after Thanksgiving, I won't be able to give a slice away. People will be full right up to ^^here^^ with pumpkin pie.

So... would you like yours with whipped cream or à la mode? :)
